How To Get Your Home Ready For Spring

April 12, 2022

As we make our way out of winter hibernation, so too do our houses, and nothing feels quite so refreshing as a spring clean after the cold months have passed.

As winter fades and the flowers begin to blossom, it's a great time to carry out some home maintenance and brighten everything up, ready for the spring and summer.

Not only does a thorough spring clean leave your home rejuvenated and ready for the joy of the warmer months, but it is a great way to schedule in some critical maintenance to ensure they get done. For many of these points, doubling up with a repeat check over as part of your winter prep routine ensures that everything is well-maintained.

Here are some key areas to include in getting your home ready for spring.

Clean the gutters

The crazy winter weather may well have left your gutters full of debris. So now that it's not so chilly, grab a ladder and give your gutters some attention. While wearing gloves, remove as much of the debris as you can, and then rinse any leftover bits and piece out with the garden hose. Ideally, you'll have someone there to help you turn the hose on once you are in position up the ladder. Next, use the hose to push water through the downspouts to ensure they are clear.

Clean taps, sinks, and showerheads

Limescale and grime can build up in taps, sinks, and showerheads, and a regular clean-out keeps them working well and the water fresh. So first, unscrew any tap aerators and showerheads and leave them to soak in equal parts water and vinegar solution for about an hour. Then, rinse them with warm water and replace them. Give your sinks and plug holes a once over, too, clearing away any clogged matter and sanitising them.

Replace all filters

Replace all filters as part of your routine spring clean. There is a range of filters throughout most homes, including range hood, air vent, and water filters. Most filters require replacement every three or six months anyway, so scheduling it in as part of your annual spring clean - as well as during your winter prep - is a handy way to ensure it gets done regularly.

Clean out the dryer vents

Built-up lint in the dryer vent can create an easily avoidable fire hazard. For vents that are located at the back of a dryer, disconnect them from the machine and remove the lint using a brush. Then, remove the vent cover outside and brush the lint away from the other end of the vent. Check that the vent cover flaps can still move freely.

Clean the walls, skirting, and power outlets

Often, we don't realise how much dust or grime our walls, skirting, and power outlets have accumulated until we start cleaning them. Giving them a good clean with a sponge or soft brush and mild soapy water is another great way to start the warmer months off, feeling that your home environment is refreshed.

Test your smoke alarms

It is imperative that you regularly maintain smoke alarms and CO detectors to ensure that they are in good working order in the event of an emergency. Testing and changing the batteries on a smoke alarm is cheap, takes only minutes, and could save your life.

Wash the windows

For many properties, especially double storey or more, cleaning the window exteriors can be a challenge. Unless all windows are easily reached from the outside, it may be best to hire a window cleaning service. Either way, this is another excellent way to wash away the remnants of winter and start afresh for the sunny days ahead.

Clean your outdoor furniture and BBQ

After months of hibernation, the entertaining season is afoot, so it's a good idea to prepare for it by cleaning and rejuvenating your outdoor space. Give any outdoor furniture a clean as per the instructions for the material used - throw any removable, washable covers in the washing machine, and brush down any others before using a mild detergent and warm water to spot-clean them. Leave them in the sun to dry.

If you have a BBQ, it's likely accumulated some dirt and dust during the winter months, and it's great to have a spick and span BBQ ready to roll when it's time to enjoy your first BBQ of the season.

The potential list of jobs you could include in your preparation for spring is endless, but these are some of the key areas to consider to prepare for the warmer months while ensuring that some vital maintenance jobs get done. Some other ideas for sprucing up your home ready for spring include:

  • Organising your under-sink cupboard
  • Clearing out and organising your pantry
  • Decluttering your wardrobe
  • Defrosting and cleaning out your freezer
  • Bringing some wonderful spring flowers into the home
  • Reorganising your garden shed
  • Rejuvenating your outdoor space ready for entertaining
  • Consider eco-friendly alternatives when replacing items such as bulbs
