Built in 1589 on the site of Brook House and its gardens, the mansion of Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke, by Richard Baldwin, Queen Elizabeth's gardener. It enjoyed the privilege of sanctuary for many years; petty criminals fled here to live unmolested by law until 1697 when the privilege was abolished. Henry Purcell, the composer, took advantage of the protection the place afforded to escape his creditors. After his day the area became a notorious slum much frequented by criminals, and part of the locality known as the Thieves' Kitchen, a training ground for young criminals.

The Bourne Estate is a group of well-regarded Victorian tenement blocks on the north side of the road.

The famous Hatton Garden area is located only moments away which is known to have become the centre of the London diamond trade. Hatton House was built in about 1576 by Sir Christopher Hatton - the street was first known as Hatton Street, Hatton Garden being the whole area between Leather Lane, Saffron Hill, Holborn and Hatton Wall.
