SO.UK pulls in the party crowd throughout the week, with an extensive drinks list, a delicious pan-Asian food menu and a top DJ line up. Just a two minute walk from Clapham Common Tube station, this trendy bar-cum-club is one of Clapham’s most buzzing haunts; a popular choice for a girl’s night out, after work drinks and nibbles, or as a final destination to dance the night away. We strutted in on a Friday night ready to party - here’s what we thought…
Named after an Arabic open-air market, SO.UK is dimly lit with twinkling hanging lamps and filled with Moroccan treasures and furnishings. Tables outside the front are extremely popular, circled by big outside heaters and filled with young twenty-somethings clinking glasses. We turned up relatively early (around 7.30ish) so managed to bag an outside table and got scanning the menu.
Before we’d got halfway through, the bar manager came outside to greet us. Keen for a recommendation, he started talking us through the menu, pointing out his favourite dishes and most popular drinks. The staff are wonderfully attentive and friendly - and we ended up chatting for half of the night.
For drinks, we settled on an Apple Bramble, a gin based cocktail shaken with fresh lime juice and zesty apple liqueur (deliciously refreshing) and a Mint Brazil Midori - a tropical treat mixed with Cachaça, coconut syrup and fresh lime served over mint and crushed ice. Yum.
As well as offering a brilliant range of cocktail, premium spirits by the bottle and magnums of vintage Champagnes, SO.UK offers up a well put together nibbles menu featuring numerous hot and cold meze choices. Our stomachs were rumbling and in need of lining, so we decided on two mezze platters of eight different tapas dishes.
A couple more cocktails later and our food had arrived: colourful, packed with flavour and elegantly presented. The first platter consisted of creamy humus with crispy pitta bread and olive oil, roasted bell peppers, a compote of aubergine cooked in a rich tomato sauce with coriander and olive oil, and salty halloumi, grilled with tomato, black olives and a hint of mint.
The second platter was just as delicious, brimming with chicken skewers doused with lemon, garlic and Moroccan spices, crispy filo pastries filled with creamy cheese, and grilled lamb koftas which came with a lovely tapenade dip. We wolfed it down with our cocktails and soaked in the party atmosphere. SO.UK serves food Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays along with great deep house tunes and some of the best cocktails in south London - the ideal ingredients for a great night out!
