Someone once told me that they weren’t a Sunday roast person, and it has really stuck with me. What? How? I battled with the conundrum, until I finally concluded that they simply couldn’t have had a proper Sunday roast. Well, life is too short for bad roasts; if you’re not a fan of the great British tradition, get yourself down to The Craft Beer Co in Clapham for a reawakening…
The Craft Beer Co. in Clapham is tucked down Clapham Manor Street, just a short stroll from either Clapham Common or Clapham North station. It stands out from its neighbours, with a bright green AstroTurf front garden and a white picket fence. The interior is cosy with dark wood and comfy chairs, and TVs have been swapped for board games and good old fashioned conversation.
But enough about the décor - let’s talk roasts. I went for the lamb (£13.95) and my fellow roast lover opted for pork (£11.95). The Craft Beer Co. pride themselves on only using the best local ingredients and meats, and they change their roast menu each week so you can always sample something new and exciting.
We’d just started getting into our Scrabble game when our plates arrived, piled-high and piping hot. I launched into the lamb which was so succulent and flavoursome it didn’t need a gravy or sauce, though the gravy was absolutely delicious - and the perfect complement to the veg. The crispy roasties certainly deserve a mention, as do the parsnips and sweet carrots.
Of course I tried the pork too (thankfully he’d had a big breakfast), which was just as good, if not better. In fact, the crispy crackling dipped into the sweet apple sauce was probably the best thing I’d eaten that week. We were suitably stuffed but managed to find some room for dessert - a heavenly homemade raspberry cheesecake (£5.50) - which we tucked into while putting down our final letters.
We didn’t get a chance to sample any craft beer as we were dry January-ing, so that’s just another excuse to go back. There’s an enormous selection of ales, quirky bottles and guest kegs, plus the usual wines and spirits, and they even do bottles to take away too. See you next Sunday!
