Hammersmith was known for being a Saxon fishing village. Its name originally meant “place with a hammer smithy or forge” which can be traced as far back as 1294. An iconic landmark of the area is the Hammersmith Bridge which was first designed by William Tierney Clark in 1827 and it became the first suspension bridge crossing the River Thames.
