Chapel Market, home of Islington’s renowned market and a popular residential area for those wishing to be in the heart of the borough. Dating back centuries, the period red-brick properties running the length of this often pedestrianised street give a real sense of history to those who walk its length. Single-storey conversions as well as renovated maisonettes can be found lying above the high street brands, supermarkets and cafes that are nestled on the ground floor plots.
Being only 2 minutes’ walk from Angel station and a 10 minute cycle to Kings Cross St Pancras, this small road is conveniently placed for those who need easy access to all over London. A choice of buses run from the Baron Street or Penton Road stops found at the end of Chapel Market, and as if those weren’t enough, those that leave from Angel station, such as the 56 to St Pauls, are also within reach.
Linking Penton Road to Liverpool Road, Chapel Market is a lively nook of Islington where local vendors run market stalls which sell everything from cheese to fresh fish to clothing and AA batteries. The real jewel in the crown of this nostalgic street is M. Manze’s, where locals have been able to get the famous, and typically East London, Pie and Mash since the family-run chain opened in1908. This small, classically decorated venue (with white tiles and wooden pews) is also a popular film set and has been frequented by well-known stars including Victoria Beckham. Expectedly, due to its close proximity to Upper Street and St John Street, loads of well-established pubs, coffee shops and restaurants can be found within a couple of mins walk of Chapel Market. Islington Museum, City University and Sadler’s Wells theatre are also within a 10 minute stroll.
Chapel Market’s buzz and central location make it extremely popular for students and young professionals, but also with those who have grown up in the area and want to stay close to home. There is always something to do either in the immediate vicinity or just down the road at any of the nearby entertainment venues, making this street a very lively and enjoyable place to live.
