Set in the sought-after St. Mary’s Ward of Islington is Napier Terrace, a small residential street popular with young families.
The street sits behind Battishill Street Gardens, a lovely green space which was opened by the poet Sir John Betjeman in early 1975. It’s a quiet place to spend the afternoon reading a book, or you’ll often see the local residents taking their dog for a stroll. In the gardens you will find a stone carving from 1842 by Musgrave Watson, the same man who designed the bronze reliefs at the bottom of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.
To access Napier Terrace you’ll have to pass by the Almeida Theatre. This small but internationally recognised play space acts as a springboard for the next generation theatre, creating work that challengers, inspires and excites its audience. It’s a great place to have on your doorstep.
The properties along here are of modern post-war design, erected in the late half of the 20th century. Each one has its own private garage space, and most have little roof gardens – if you look up you will see that residents treasure these outside spaces, with overhanging pot plants and colourful flowers springing up from the rooftops. The ivy covered blossom trees along the road help the break up the symmetry of the building design.
The location couldn’t get much better in terms of transport links, and it’s centrally located between two useful stations. There’s Highbury & Islington which offers services on the Victoria Line, the Overground and National Rail, and Angel station is also a similar distance in the other direction providing links on the Northern Line. Both stations are within a five minute walk. London buses also have several routes an hour from Upper Street to Chelsea, King’s Cross, the City, Waterloo and London Bridge.
With Upper Street on the doorstep, there’s no lack of choice when it comes to wining and dining! And for all your local amenities there are a number of supermarkets along the nearby Liverpool Road, which is within walking distance.
A great all-round location for amenities, transport, green spaces and within easy reach of everything Islington has to offer.
