In the Middle Ages, Highbury had a tiny population and was a rural farming community up until the early 1800s. It was this rural character that attracted many Londoners to the area. But between the 1860s and 1870s, the rural character quickly disappeared during a building boom of terraces, mansions and villas and this saw population increase with many commuters moving to Highbury, especially when the Piccadilly and Victoria underground line arrived in the area.
