Uber-cool and exclusively ‘men only’, Arthur Razor offers the full barber service, plus a range of skin care, body care and waxing treatments from their private treatment room. In their own words, “it sounds (s)wanky, but we’re not.” And they’re right - this isn’t the place for a Swedish, hot stone, aromatherapy oil, neck massage and a chai tea latte with soya milk. Think more along the lines of a great haircut, a traditional hot towel shave, a deep tissue massage and a craft beer on the house. Donning a fake moustache, I headed west to find out a little more about the hairdresser that’s making all the girls jealous…
Just opposite Acton Central station, Arthur Razor exudes cool and there’s a vintage, branded motorbike propped up outside. It’s a similar story when you step inside, and when you meet Tony - owner, director, father and avid footballer. With a super trendy beard and an even trendier haircut, he’s a great example of why men should take grooming seriously. Extremely aware of his strict men-only policy, I stay well away from the leather chair, but launch into conversation about the beard trend and how male grooming has taken off in recent years.
I clock his facial expressions and can tell immediately that this isn’t a guy fazed by trends - though they do offer an urban beard trim for those fashionable enough to need one. He tells me that he’s passionate about cutting hair, and believes a sharp haircut and a regular grooming regime is key to feeling good about yourself. He’s relaxed, confident and very likeable - the kind of guy you’d trust with a pair of scissors around your head!
Tony has a huge list of loyal clients, who travel from afar for their specific cuts. His wet shave is one of the best in the business, and he’s extremely talented with a pair of scissors, able to create a huge range of vintage cuts and slick modern ‘dos. In fact, he can give you whatever cut you request.
I get the impression from talking to him that he really takes the time to find out how you want your hair cut, and right on cue he starts talking about how important it is to chat to your barber. He tells me he always starts a cut with a consultation, and then takes pride - and 45 minutes of it - in creating an exceptional haircut. During those 45 minutes you’ll drink the best craft beer - or a G&T, whatever your tipple - listen to some carefully constructed playlists of Indie pop rock, 80’s classics and new tunes, and flick through some cool, independent magazines. As I'm leaving I see a woman having a good nosey in the window as she 'drops' her boyfriend off for a cut and shave - it seems i'm not the only one who's jealous that I'm not allowed the coolest hairdressers in Acton.
