With wellness firmly set as the buzzword of the summer, we decided that we needed to add a great smoothie and juice bar to Portico Places. It didn’t take us long to find out that The Blend House is the place to get your greens on the go, (or a heavenly peanut butter jelly smoothie or a chocolate shake if you’re on a cheat day). We popped in to meet owner Maria - tanned, toned and glowing - to find out a little more about Acton’s new healthy hangout.
The Blend House has been open just shy of three months, but it already looks right at home on Churchfield Road. Quirky and quaint, with white picket-fence style tables and chairs for alfresco lunchin’, it’s the perfect spot for a salted caramel café mocha and a mother’s meeting, or a fruity smoothie or chocolate milkshake as an after-school treat with the kids. In fact, you can’t help but stop if you’re walking past; flower-filled bird cages, hanging plants and fluttering butterflies adorn the shop front, and I realise I’ve been admiring the décor for so long that Maria has come to the door to greet me.
Smiling and radiant, Maria ushers me inside and offers me a seat; the picket-fence theme continues inside and the room is filled with heart trinkets, flowers and quirky light fittings. She bursts into conversation, telling me that previously she was working as Sales & Marketing Director for a hotel, but she took a year out for maternity leave to make The Blend House her “little project!” The place looks perfect but she tells me it’s still a working progress, and they’re currently renovating the lower ground floor to provide more seating. I gather it’s going to have an outdoor/indoor feel - think fake grass, big comfy bean bags scattered on the floor and a picnic-like area. It’ll also be available to hire out for kids’ private parties, and they plan to offer kids’ activities there, too.
But enough about the look of the place, let’s talk smoothies. Maria tells me the most popular is the blueberry and pomegranate oatmeal drink, and as I take a sip I can see why. Velvety, rich, fruity and creamy - it’s almost hard to believe it’s so good for you. It’s also hard to believe how filling it is, and I instantly see why it’s such a popular breakfast alternative for busy bees who want to get their nutrients in a drink they can take to go.
The health conscious have a fantastic menu to choose from. The Detoxinator is a delicious blend of avocado, celery, strawberries, beetroot, coconut and apple, Berrylicious is a fresh and fruity mix of goji berries, strawberries, blueberries and almonds, and Conway Kick is a refreshing burst of Green tea, spinach, avocado and grapes. You can even add shots of superfoods to really amp up the healthiness.
If you’re not worrying about your waistline though, the peanut butter jelly smoothie is a must. Maria tells me her little girl loves the fruit smoothies, and they’re a quick and easy way to make sure they’re getting part of their five-a-day. There’s also a range of chocolate bar shakes the littl’uns go mad for - though I can vouch for the fact that big kids find them just as tasty.
It’s obvious the drinks are the main attraction here, but the food is just as tempting. There’s a great selection of deep-filled sandwiches, crusty baguettes and lots of sweet treats, and everything’s freshly made each morning, ready for hungry lunchers. I use all my inner strength to decline a gigantic choc chip cookie; after my health kick I feel motivated, energised and ready to take on the world - or at least my emails!
