A bespoke suit is a fantastic investment. That’s why we’ve scouted out a tip-top tailoring service that'll have you looking sharp in no time. Ben Lawrence, situated in trendy Shoreditch, offers quality tailoring for the modern man, with suits starting from £650. We spoke to Ben Wheeler and Stephen Lawrence Garvey, the men behind the brand, about their business and why every gent’s wardrobe deserves a good suit…
How did Ben Lawrence come to life?
The company is actually an amalgamation of our names Ben Wheeler and Stephen Lawrence Garvey. Ben and I realised we shared the same passion for beautifully-crafted suits when we were chatting over a beer after graduating from University. We spent a couple of years researching and getting to know the industry before developing our own tailoring range that focuses on style, fit and balance.
What does your shop say about you?
The world of tailoring can be quite intimidating, so we were determined to create a relaxed environment where we can share our expertise and ensure our customers feel like they can take their time over their decisions. We are big on quality and stocks thousands of fantastic fabrics, from Savile Row Mills to Italian suiting, so an outfit from Ben Lawrence will be truly personal.
Why is a tailored suit an essential part of a modern man’s wardrobe?
Though different events often call for different attire, you'd be surprised how much versatility you can get out of one sharply-tailored suit. Job interviews, weddings, nice dinners - a bespoke suit will give you a sense of real confidence that you can’t get from an off-the-rack number, as well as really standing the test of time.
How long should a tailored suit last?
A good suit is definitely a solid investment - if you take good care of it (and your waistline), it can last decades. Investing in a couple of extra pairs of trousers for you suit can add years to its life, and we advise never to wear the same trousers on consecutive days as wool needs time to recover.
A good wardrobe rotation is the key to getting longevity out of your suits and only dry clean when absolutely necessary - dry cleaning is a suit's kryptonite!
What do you need to consider before heading to a tailors?
It doesn’t matter whether you already know what you want or you don’t have a clue. We talk our clients through style, fit and balance, advising on cuts and styles to suit the body shape.
How should one match a tie and shirt with a suit?
If you’re going to invest in a good suit, you have to pair it with the right shirt! We actually make bespoke shirts in our Cheshire Street shop in Shoreditch, and are more than happy to help customers match suits with shirts and ties.
Ties can be a great way to show off your signature style so don't be afraid to experiment - a textured linen tie can sit excellently with a striped shirt. Always tie a knot that works with your collar shape and be wary of overpowering contrasting stripes and prints.
If you can't find a tie that works with your shirt we will make one!
Suits at Ben Lawrence start from £650 and are made within 4-6 weeks. Click here to book an appointment or give the boys a call on 020 7729 2917.
