There are tons of added attractions to this Bethnal Green boozer: a private karaoke room, high five Mondays with Margaritas for £5, the highly rated Super Star pub quiz every Tuesday, live sport action on the big screens - 6 Nations, anyone? - plus resident DJs on the weekends spinning disco, funk and soul. The team have seriously thought of everything - including partnering with us to give our Portico Places cardholders a tasty 20% off.
Known simply as ‘The Star’ to locals, this cosy, dog-friendly pub on Bethnal Green Road is a little gem. It’s part of the Star family, who also run the Star by Hackney Downs, Jackdaw and Star, and the newly opened Leyton Star - and you can use your Portico Places card at any of their venues.
Spread over two floors, it’s a colourful mix between a traditional East End pub and Shoreditch, think big oak tables, bare brick walls, chandeliers and bunting hanging from the rafters. The place was lively when we arrived, but we made a beeline to the bar and were served within seconds. The staff here are chatty and friendly - the bartender even offered to bring our wine over so we got comfy on a bench in the corner and started scanning the menu.
Imaginative burgers are served alongside a drinks list of real cask ales from local brewers, organic ciders, classic cocktails and a concise but considered wine list. If you fancy something a little posher, the deep friend confit duck leg comes highly recommended.
We were in the mood for a proper burger and settled on the beef bourguignon cheeseburger (which is the pub’s signature dish), and the fried chicken goujon burger. Of course we had to have some cheesy fries on the side, and some roasted carrots and parsnips to make ourselves feel a little healthier.
The pub was lively but not raucous (rare for a Friday in this part of East London), so we could enjoy a good catch up without having to shout at each other. We didn’t have to wait long for our food either, which was generously proportioned and served on trendy fast food style trays. The burgers were seriously tasty, the signature beef was a moreish mix of three hour marinated grilled beef stew, melted cheddar cheese (and loads of it), Patate sauce, lettuce, and gravy, while the chicken burger comprised a tender fried chicken goujon, brie, caramelized onions, chili sauce and crunchy lettuce. The chips were tasty and the carrots and parsnips were amazing, honey-glazed and deliciously sweet.
The Star deserves its popularity. It’s a cosy pub serving great food, and an extremely pleasant place to hang out. We can’t wait to come back for the pub quiz - and another burger!
