Wandsworth councillors are calling for rail services between central London and Gatwick Airport to stop at Balham Station, which would enable passengers to avoid heavy congestion at Victoria, Clapham Junction and London Bridge.
The extension would also create a new link between Gatwick and the Northern Line and vastly reduce journey times to the airport for residents in Balham and Tooting.
Local businesses would also welcome the extension and believe it will give their livelihoods a boost.
The Government’s plan is to combine the Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern rail franchise to improve access to the airport and also for the Gatwick Express to include a stop at Clapham Junction.
The idea is that commuters to the airport in south London will no longer need to head through central terminus, therefore easing congestion in Zone One.
“Transport links are vital to local residents,” says Bruno De Sousa, manager at the Balham branch of lettings agent Edmund Cude. “This proposed extension would not only help those living in Balham but would also hugely benefit those living in the whole of south London.”
