Top Ten Best Winter Walks in London

With the temperature set to drop this week, we have rounded up our favourite walking routes in and around the Capital. Whether you want to make the most of the crisp Winter weather or if you just fancy a long Weekend walk, we’ve got something suitable for everyone.

1.Richmond Park

Located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Richmond Park is the largest Royal Park in London and home to over 600 deer. In fact, Charles I established the park in the 17th century as a deer park. Today, Richmond Park has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve. The Tamsin Trail around Richmond Park at 7.35 miles is the longest walk around the park, providing several photo opportunities of the famous deer and wildlife. The King Henry's Mound near Pembroke Lodge also offers a view point all the way to St. Paul's Cathedral in Central London.

2.Walthamstow Wetlands


Just fifteen minutes from Central London, Walthamstow Wetlands is a fully operational 211-hectare Thames Water reservoir site, which is the main source of water supply for 3.5 million people. The reservoir is also home to a variety of wildlife, ranging from rare waterfowl to majestic birds of prey. The Walthamstow Wetlands Circular route offers a five mile walk around the new wetlands area.

3.Battersea Park


Battersea Park is a 200-acre green space located in South West London. The park occupies marshland reclaimed from the Thames and land formerly used for market gardens. The Battersea Park Loop covers 2.2 miles and offers great photo opportunities along the River Thames and Albert Bridge.

4.Epping Forest


Epping Forest, bordering north-eastern Greater London in Essex, offers 8000 acres of green space to explore in the crisp Winter months and a variety of circular walks from 1.25 miles to 6.6 miles. One of the most popular routes is the Willow Trail, taking in the various birdlife, grazing cattle and a 350-year-old oak tree.

5.Regent's Canal Walk


Arguably one of London's best-kept secrets, the nine mile walk along the length of Regent's Canal takes in some of London's most famous landmarks, including Regent's Park, Camden Lock, King's Cross and much of Central London.

6.Hampstead Heath


Hampstead Heath is a large ancient London heath, covering 320 hectares. The heath has 18 ponds, three of which are used for wild swimming. The Parliament Hill viewpoint, the highest point in London at 98 metres high, offers amazing views of famous London landmarks including St. Paul's Cathedral, The Shard and the Palace of Westminster. The most popular walking route is the Hampstead Heath circular route at 4.5 miles.

7.Greenwich Park


A former hunting park, Greenwich Park is one of the largest green spaces in South East London, covering 183 acres or 2 miles. Greenwich Park is also home to the Royal Observatory and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and offers fantastic views across the River Thames and to Canary Wharf. You can also easily get to Greenwich by boat if you fancy a day out from the city.

8.Victoria Park


Victoria Park is the largest park in Tower Hamlets and arguably one of London’s most visited green spaces. The park covers 213 acres of open space and boasts a large open lake and a variety of wildlife. The Victoria Park Memoryscape Trail guides you through several famous spots in the park, perfect for a crisp Winter’s Day.

9.The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk


A 7-mile-long circular walking trail in central London, dedicated to the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales. The walk passes all the Winter wildlife and green space between Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St. James's Park in a figure-eight pattern, as well as passing five sites that are associated with Princess Diana’s life: Kensington Palace, Spencer House, Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, and Clarence House.

10.Lea Valley


The Lea Valley Walk is a 50-mile-long-distance path between Leagrave, Luton and all the way down to Limehouse in East London. The lengthy walk passes landmarks such as Waltham Abbey, King George V Reservoir, Canary Wharf and Tottenham Marshes. The walk can be divided into six sections if you don’t fancy walking all the way to the source of the River Lea on a cold’s Winter’s morning!
