If you like tequila ice cold in a Margarita, in a shot glass with a side of salt and lemon, or in a queue next to four other tequila-based drinks (hey, we’re not judging), you’ll love Café Pacifico. This Covent Garden-based cantina is all about good food and good times, with a mean Mexican menu and a dangerously good drinks list. I headed down on a Saturday night expecting the real Mexican deal, here’s what I thought…
Café Pacifico is lit up in red neon lights, tucked down quiet Langley Street behind Covent Garden Tube. Step inside and the atmosphere hits you with a loud Arriba; the tables are heaving with parties clanging drinks together and sharing nachos, the walls are lined with Cuban artwork, and the bar is one of the best stocked I’ve ever seen, decorated with certificates naming those who’ve taken on the restaurant’s £250 shot.
We sat down on a table near the window and were immediately greeted and passed a bowl of tortilla chips and chunky salsa - tick. After a quick scan of the menu, we decided on the chicken and steak fajitas, which came with rich black beans, warm torillas and roasted onions and peppers, all served on a sizzling skillet, and the fresh tuna steak tacos. We teamed our meals with sweet potato fries with chilli mayo, fried chilli coated whitebait with smoked mayo and a large helping of homemade guacamole.
The food was a colourful line up of deliciousness, but the tuna tacos took the top spot for us. In fact, the menu is a winner for taco lovers, who can choose from tempura seabass and king prawn tacos, chargrilled rib-eye tacos, roast vegetable and bean tacos and chicken tempura tacos (to name but a few).
Service was quick and friendly, which meant the drinks kept flowing. We washed our food down with a mean frozen Margarita as our waiter passed us the tequila and desserts menu.
Before we knew it we’d ordered churros and tequila; when in Mexico! The deep-fried churros were light and crisp and came with spicy chilli-chocolate sauce that gave a real kick. While I sipped on a shot of Café Patron, my dinner date was passed a wooden tray of three tequilas and a spicy tomato palate cleanser, and he claimed each shot was better than the one before. Next time we’ll come for dinner before a night out!
