It’s Friday afternoon and I’m literally counting down the hours until I’m sipping cocktails at our latest Portico Place.
Opening their first London restaurant in 2004, the Crazy Bear has gone on to collect several accolades from the likes of The Times, The Evening Standard and The London Lifestyle Awards, giving it a reputation which preceded it.
Just five minute’s walk from Tottenham Court Road, after some drinks in Soho, we head up to Fitzrovia to visit Crazy Bear. It’s not hard to miss it – with large carved wooden bears and more fairy lights than the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree, it’s a welcoming sight and we can’t wait to get inside.
As we’re guided to our private two person leather booth, I take in the warm décor. With dark woods, low lighting and lots of nooks and crannies, the Crazy Bear offers intimate dining in a cosy setting. Upstairs is the restaurant and downstairs is a slightly cooler, bar vibe, with a DJ in full swing.
Once installed in our seats, with a glass of prosecco in hand, it’s time to salivate over the menu. There’s plenty on offer within the thai themed menu and we opt to start with the pan-friend baby squid and vegetable spring rolls. The squid is light and delicious, and the pastry on the spring rolls is out of this world – the perfect starters to whet our appetites!
Over our bellinis, the waitress helps us pick the perfect accompaniments for our mains. We’re treated to a feast of seabream, beef, noodles, pak choi and grilled eggplant – an amazing mixture of food that we tuck into greedily. The seabream is incredible, and the eggplant is my favourite dish, flavoursome and moreish.
By the time we’ve polished our mains off, we’re *almost* full – but we’ve saved enough space to share a rich chocolate crème brulee and to also sample a ‘mini cocktail shot’. Shots on offer include a Pornstar Martini mini with caramalised passionfruit and an Espresso Martini mini with Bailey’s whipped cream. The mixologist is a genius and these shots are a work of art – the perfect way to end our meal.
If you want to spoil yourself, your friends and family to a delicious thai treat and some fine dining, why not start the weekend right with a trip to Fitzrovia’s Crazy Bear?
