Paying to be in sub-zero temperatures for 40 minutes may not sound like much fun - but trust us, it’s definitely an experience to tick off your London bucket list! Icebar is the UK’s only cocktail bar permanently frozen solid, where the walls, bar, tables and even your own personal glass are artfully sculpted from crystal clear ice. Enjoy sipping on frozen champagne while admiring the seriously impressive ice sculptures, before making your way upstairs for a delicious meal in their cosy, adjoining restaurant. Oh - and don’t forget to brrring your Portico Places card for 10% off!
Icebar London is located on one of central London’s most vibrant side streets, a short walk from Oxford Circus station. Head inside and you’ll find an intimate cocktail bar, with a small but well stocked bar, comfy sofas and a relaxed atmosphere. We sat down and had a quick chat and a delicious pear mojito with Manager Tom Hunter, who explained a little bit about the business.
Icebar opened its doors to the public over a decade ago, but each year the entire bar is transformed with a new design theme and layout, constructed entirely from glistening ice.
Armed with a little Dutch courage thanks to the cocktails, we threw on a thermal coat and gloves to keep warm and gingerly headed downstairs for our 40-minute session.
Icebar really is worth a visit. After the initial shock of the sub-freezing temperature, we just stood for a while and marvelled at the unique interior: the walls, bars, tables and even the glasses have been skilfully sculpted from bright white ice, which had been carefully transported from the frozen Torne River in Jukkasjärvi, northern Sweden.
The current theme is ‘Wild in the City’ - which certainly came through; from a gigantic ice gorilla to a mammoth coiled up octopus, the bar has been taken over by the most amazing frozen creatures.
We enjoyed a refreshing glass of champagne and a few selfies with the animals before heading downstairs for dinner and a bit of warmth!
Icebar offers a modern European restaurant and cocktail lounge space, with roaring fire screens and a quirky, industrial look. We ordered the BBQ aubergine and salmon, with some creamy corn on the side for good measure. The salmon was extremely fresh, with a thick soy-maple glaze, and the tender-stem broccoli was crunchy and flavoursome. We also really enjoyed the aubergine, which came with a light parsley and grain salad, fried halloumi and a moreish kebab sauce. Overall, delicious food and a really cosy restaurant, which we could have stayed in all evening nursing a glass of red wine.
Icebar really is the most enchanting winter experience - and now you can enjoy 10% off tickets, drinks, food and gift items with a Portico Places card.
