No other place in London has been transformed quite like King’s Cross. The vibrant new City quarter is now the chosen place to meet, eat and drink - and Star of Kings is at the heart of it all. Sister venue to the popular Star of Bethnal Green, this canal-side, good ol’ fashioned pub is all about music, entertainment and good times. We popped in to check out the action…
Star of Kings is located on York Way in King’s Cross, tucked behind bustling Granary Square, with its jumping fountains and brand new Waitrose. It’s a traditional looking pub from the outside, but step inside and things are far from run-of-the-mill; you’ll find pinball machines, floral walls and velvet sofas and a basement club room with a large stage.
We arrived on a warm spring evening, so we chose a bench outside and started scanning the drinks menu. The weather had perked up so we decided to celebrate with a bottle of house rose. If cocktails are more your thing, the pub runs a 2 for £10 cocktail offer on Thursdays - and word on the street is that they make a mean mojito.
Less about the views and more about the booze, the vibe here is pure fun. The wine goes down very easily, and it’s the kind of place where tables quickly get shared and neighbours get chatting.
We stuck around for food, which was a great decision. The kitchen is currently run by popular patty serving pop-up Yeah Burger!, the genius’ behind the much raved about scotch egg burger. Burgers feature prominently on a food menu (unsurprisingly), but we were in the mood for sharing so went for the Shuffle chips and nachos. The chips were seriously pimped, doused with truffle oil, mushroom salt and the famous smoked Yeah! Sauce. Very tasty. Likewise, these weren’t just any nachos... Sky-high with succulent Mexican steak strips, fresh guac, sour cream and spicy tomato salsa and dripping in melted cheese.
Before we knew it the sun had gone in and we made our way inside to catch a bit of karaoke action. There’s always something going on here, whether it’s a pub quiz night, a science showoff (a chaotic cabaret for science lovers), DJs or comedy nights - head to their website to find out what’s on, when!
