Gilgamesh invites you to gather underneath the stars and revel in a gastronomic pan-Asian dining experience. The internationally famous Camden restaurant inspires awe with a 40 ft high retractable roof and ceiling glass windows, allowing diners to sip delicious cocktails and feast al fresco style on master crafted sushi and sashimi and a tantalising selection of dim sum…
Gilgamesh is impressive by any stretch of the imagination. The pure scale of the place is outstanding and marble pillars, ceiling panels and sky high palm trees add to the opulence. We were seated on a round table at the window, so we had a beautiful view of Camden at night.
Though the décor is extravagant, the food is very much traditional and typical Asian cuisine. We nibbled on some salty edamame beans while we mulled over the menu, deciding on sake steamed mussels to start, with a selection of sushi, nigari, sashimi and dim sum. The mussels arrived steaming and there was a lovely fragrant lemongrass aroma. They tasted beautifully fresh with a salty and rich miso flavour.
The sushi and dim sum were both presented immaculately. The stand-out dishes were the avocado and sweet potato tempura, which were beautifully crisp and drizzled with a thick honey dressing, and the spicy tuna maki rolls, which were filled with a creamy and fiery sauce that melted in the mouth.
For mains, we decided to try their very highly acclaimed curries. I went for the Malaysian seafood jungle curry (£17) which was wonderfully creamy and zesty, with just the right amount of spice from the green chillies and peppercorns. My dinner date literally inhaled the beef panang curry (£19): a spicy - but manageable - dish with a generous helping of tender and succulent pieces of Sirloin.
We skipped dessert for a cocktail, as we’d heard on the grapevine that the drinks are just as good as the food. There are multiple bar and lounge areas, plus a new champagne bar, so we decided to vacate our table and enjoy new - but just as opulent - surroundings. We went for the cocktail Kutu, a spicy gin-based drink flavoured with chili, peach syrup, grapefruit juice and a squeeze of fresh lemon - the rumours were right…
