Stingray Café is a hidden gem that we just have to expose. Voted as one of the best restaurants in London to eat gluten-free food by the Telegraph, this small neighbourhood bistro serves up deliciously authentic Italian food - with or without wheat. They also offer some mean vegan pizza and pasta options, as well as the best Aperol Spritz outside of Italy. Don’t believe us? Go see for yourself…

Italian Restaurant Tufnell ParkSituated on lively Fortress road, just a couple of minutes from Tufnell Park station, Stingray Café is a popular local restaurant that’s always busy.

We headed over on a warm Thursday evening and managed to bag a table outside. Though if you don’t fancy eating, drinking and watching the world go by on Tufnell Park’s liveliest street, there’s a spacious mezzanine level inside as well as downstairs seating.

The food here is cheap and cheerful, with dishes ranging from freshly made pastas and stone baked pizzas, to super food salads. We opted for a Fungi Salad and a Pollo Picante pizza to share, with a glass of prosecco, naturally. The waitress who took our order was eminently likeable, offering an enthusiastic welcome and slick, friendly service.

Our food came quickly: the pizza was generously topped with gooey mozzarella, tender chicken and spicy soft Calabrian sausage, sprinkled with fresh chilli and basil. It had excellent flavours, just the right amount of heat, and the basil leaves scattered on top gave the pizza and amazing freshness. The chefs clearly use the impressive pizza oven to great effect, turning out generously sized, crispy pizzas with and quality toppings. And they’re great value for money, starting from £7.95.

Pizza Tufnell Park

Pizza was the perfect pairing with our colourful salad bowl, which came complete with buttery garlic mushrooms, salty halloumi, and tangy artichoke and roasted sundried tomatoes. The mixed leaves had been lightly doused with a balsamic drizzle and the salad was served with irresistible warm fresh bread.

We’d left a little space for dessert, so ordered the Nutella & Banana Waffle with vanilla ice cream, adding peanut butter for good measure.

Stingray Café puts real heart into its offerings, and we left suitably stuffed with change in our pockets. What more could you want from your local restaurant?
