How do you convince yourself to get off the sofa, out of your pyjamas, into your exercise clothes and to the gym? How about a combination of the fact your jeans are feeling a little tight, you’re about to eat your body weight in Easter Eggs, and we’ve just secured you a fantastic deal at Camden’s coolest gym? The Fitness Mosaic is three floors of fitness fun, offering a stunning, fully equipped gym and over 100 classes per week. I pulled up my socks and went to try out their Barre Class…

The Fitness Mosaic is located on Chalk Farm Road, a 6 minute walk from Camden Tube (3 if you’re a member), or a 2 minute walk from Chalk Farm Tube. It’s newly refurbished and completely glass fronted, and looks more like a boutique health club then your run of the mill gym. As you walk inside you’re greeted with a homely “living room” space, where you can sit and enjoy a juice or smoothie freshly made from their juice bar, or just relax with a book or your laptop after a workout.

I had time to have a quick look around before my class, and the gym is fully equipped with new machines and tons of fitness equipment. The changing rooms are modern and clean, with hot showers, hairdryers and all the essentials.

The Barre Class was being held in one of the huge studio rooms. I was a little worried when I spotted the bars, but there were about 10 women of all ages and abilities stretching and getting ready for the workout which put me at ease a little.

The class claims to give you the elegance and strength of a ballerina in just one session, and I can honestly say (a day afterwards) that all my muscles are aching from such an intense workout. It’s a full body workout with small isometric contractions, great for toning the legs, arms and abs, burning calories and improving your general fitness. The class teacher, Melody Lubin, did the work out with us, and was excellent at motivating and informing us on what we were working out. She also had a really loud voice which is needed in a studio of that size!

The class was a graceful dance and conditioning workout that incorporated Pilates, Yoga, resistance training (squeezing a ball between your legs!) and ballet techniques. I am as graceful as a baby elephant, but the ballet parts were easy to follow and we used the bar as a way of keeping balance when stretching and promoting muscle strength. It was a fantastic workout and I left feeling strong and elegant (ish!).
With over 100 classes a week, there’s something for everyone at The Fitness Mosaic.
