Indoor cycling classes are taking London by storm. We love the electric atmosphere, the pumping music, and the fact you usually burn around 600 calories per class. (That’s the equivalent of a Big Mac if you’re partial to a McDonalds.) Seriously though, after just one class you’ll be so high on endorphins that you’ll be counting down the days ‘till you get on the bike again. That’s how we felt anyway after a class at Cycle Rhythm…
Cycle Rhythm is a state-of-the-art indoor cycling studio, located on the High Street in Loughton, Essex. It’s a clean, compact studio, with a small gym for those looking to work out or stretch before or after a class.
We arrived at 9.20am on Thursday, ready for our class at 9.30am. Tracey the receptionist was extremely welcoming, showing us to the changing rooms and letting us know where to find towels and water. She even gave us the option to hire cycling shoes for a smoother, more efficient ride, but the phrase “all the gear, no idea” sprang to mind, so we kindly declined and made our way to the studio.
There are a squadron of 54 Keiser bikes in the studio, which have been cleverly arranged on split levels to ensure a perfect view of the instructor. We hopped on a bike near the back and got ourselves set up. Dawn, the friendly instructor, was walking round making sure everyone was comfy and showing newbies how to operate the bikes.
A few minutes later, Dawn dimmed the lights, turned the music up and instructed us to start peddling. We powered through virtual sprints, mountain climbers and headwinds, all while singing along to some great 90’s tunes! The fantastic thing about Cycle Rhythm is their innovative Rhythm board technology; flat screens at the front of the studio show how you’re performing against others, which gives the class a great competitive aspect.
Though your performance is monitored, Dawn hammered home that it was fine to go at your own pace and resistance level, and it was lovely to see a huge range of ages and abilities enjoying the class.
After 45 minutes we were dripping in sweat, but we still found ourselves pushing our bodies to the limit. Spinning may be tough, but boy does it get results!
