Featured in OM magazine’s “Amazing Places” and now part of Portico Places, Lumi Power Yoga is the place to go in Hammersmith if you’re in need of a good stretch. They specialise in hot power vinyasa yoga, but offer a range of classes to suit everybody, from newbies to mums-to-be to expert yogis. I headed to King Street to find out why this is the best place to practise your downward dog…
Forget limbering up in a dusty church hall, Lumi Yoga offers modern yoga seven days a week in contemporary, clean facilities. It’s run by Chiswick locals Ari and Elina Iso-Rautio, though apparently they have a helping hand from Matilda their two year old.
Both Ari and Elina have extensive experience in teaching yoga, coaching and massage therapy and are extremely passionate about introducing people to the benefits of yoga. It’s a great way of getting fit, - without huffing and puffing and getting out of breath - it seriously increases your energy levels and it’s a great way to build strength and de-stress. As someone who struggles to sleep, I can also vouch for the fact that yoga is brilliant for boosting relaxation and helping insomnia.
Lumi Yoga specialises in power yoga in a heated studio, but there’s over 40 classes a week to choose from, including hot and non-heated classes, plus power vinyasa, pregnancy yoga, little lumis (for the youngest of yogis), postnatal yoga and meditation. Funk and flow is a popular class, which is a power flow yoga class taught to some great music. Ari tells me the 9.30 morning classes are popular with parents who come and practice after the school run, but there are also early classes and late evening classes available, ideal for those who work.
The great thing about Lumi Yoga is that everyone is welcome. In their own words, “you don’t need to be flexible, strong, lean, young or in fact anything but yourself, just the way you are.” There are classes for newbies as well as the more advanced and the teachers make sure to offer variations during the class to suit everyone’s practice. See you on the mat!
Introduction offer for new customers: 21 days of unlimited yoga for £30 / 15% off 5 class pass (£60 rather than £70)
