On a Sunday evening I can think of worse things to do than soak up the last of the weekend sunshine, sat outside an authentic Italian restaurant on a quiet side road in Islington sipping a glass of rosé…
I’ve decided to turn Sunday into ‘Sun-yay!’ by heading down to test out our latest Portico Place, Radici, for dinner and as we tuck into some fresh olives and a bottle of light, fruity rosé, we people watch over nearby Upper Street and take in the scrumptious smells wafting out of the restaurant.
Poring over the menu is the first task of the evening. Split into several delicious sections, every meal option sounds as incredible as the last, so it genuinely takes longer to pick our meals than to eat them!
We opt for the mackerel, yoghurt and watermelon and the smoked aubergine crocchettes starter and are taken aback by how deliciously authentic the food is compared to other Italians we’ve tried in London. The crocchettes have great flavour on the aubergine and a tangy chilli sauce takes them to the next level. The mackerel and watermelon is a combination I wouldn’t have thought to put together but the watermelon works well as a palate cleanser before we get to our mains.
Given the authenticity of the Italian flavours so far, we opt for pasta mains, with the pine nut and pesto lasagne and the tortelli smoked burrata, butter, sage and hazelnuts. The tortelli is light, cheesy and buttery without feeling oily and the lasagne is delicious, with the pine nuts offering a nice difference in texture. We treat ourselves to some zucchini frittas on the side and these are dangerously morish - crisp and light!
As the sun sets on the weekend, we ask the team to stick on the outdoor heaters and grab a pannacotta with summer berries to share and a couple of espressos to finish off our Italian feast.
One of the many perks of living in London is the incredible food on offer and I'm pleased to say that tonight we've found another 'must visit' to add to the recommendations list.
As far as I’m concerned, if this is how we roll on a Sunday, ‘Sun-yay!’ is the new ‘Fri-yay!’. Going into Monday feeling happily content with my weekend, I’d recommend a visit to anyone fancying a visit to the peaceful and friendly Islington, with plenty of great bars nearby if you want to carry on your evening afterwards.
