If you like real ale, you’ll love The Taproom. This urban boozer started life as a pop-up in 2012, but had such raging success with beer conscious locals that it now has a permanent home on Upper Street. They serve their own microbrews and beers straight from the cask, plus a delicious range of artisan meat and cheese boards and hand-rolled pizzas. Cask lovers, need we say more?
The Taproom is relaxed and industrial, with exposed brick walls covered with unusual beer coasters, steel pipes, low hanging lights and long, sociable benches with beer barrels seats. There’s also a huge screen which can be pulled down when sport is on - which is quite often!
Their unique temperature controlled, gravitating stillage is the main focus though, which is proudly on display behind the bar. It’s this unique contraption that means there’s less than half a pint of beer in the line between the cask and the glass - impressive!
Unsurprisingly at The Taproom it’s all about the beer. They serve eight gravity, four hand pulls, seven keg lines and over 50 bottled beers, so there’s a lot to sample and a lot to love. You can choose between a pint or a taster flight of thirds, and Ben - owner, barman and beer fanatic - is always happy to give his advice and find what you’re after. And as the beers rotate daily, there’s always something new to try; check out their Twitter to see the beers currently available. If beer isn’t your thing - GET OUT - there’s also a great range of top-shelf spirits and fine wines available.
They’re also big on bar snacks, cleverly pairing food with their brews. Warm sausage rolls, giant scotch eggs, toasties specially designed by the top chef at Heston Blumenthal and artisan meat and cheese boards are all popular and delicious options. All snacks are lovingly homemade with the finest ingredients from Borough Market and served with delicious homemade chutney. Hand-rolled pizzas are also coming very soon to The Taproom - just another reason for a return visit!
