Portico has opened in
Walthamstow Awesomestow! We’ve been busy making over our new office on Hoe Street, as well as scouring the area for the best haunts and hangouts to recommend to you guys. Turns out we didn’t have to look far for a great British boozer though; The Goose - our new neighbour and latest Portico Places partner - is a loved local landmark, offering great value grub, 2-for-1 cocktails and enough TV screens to offer a 360-degree football experience…
The Goose is the first thing you see when you get off the train at Walthamstow Central. It’s a big busy pub on the corner Selborne Road and Hoe Street, with pretty hanging baskets filled with pink flowers. It’s clearly a favourite among locals; step inside and you’re greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a wonderfully mixed crowd, from couples chatting over a bottle of wine and gaggles of friends starting their night, to locals reading the paper or watching sport on TV.
We headed to the pub on a sunny, Sunday afternoon. The place was full to the brim so we sat in their garden area which was kitted out with screens playing the Liverpool game. After ten minutes cheering on the reds we’d worked up quite an appetite, so grabbed a waitress to order some food.
The food on offer is typical pub grub: burgers, grill options, fish and chips, pies, sarnies and lots of veggie and gluten free options too. We settled on nachos and a three way chicken burger, which consisted of two southern-friend chicken goujons, topped with a mini BBQ chicken and bacon cheese melt, pulled chicken and chorizo... we said we were hungry!
Our food came quickly and was generously portioned and tasty, but it’s mostly about the drinks here. Options range party bowl crowd pleasers to classic cocktails which are 2-for-1 each and every day. There's a big wine list too, The New Zealand Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc is a mere £15 a bottle, with prosecco from just £12.99. Beer hounds have a huge choice of cask ales and IPAS.
You can spend a whole day in here watching the football, eating and drinking. It’s a proper local pub, with prices to reflect that: you’ll be jumping for joy when you’re charged just £2.90 for a pint - a reason to return in itself!
