Last week an email popped into my inbox titled ‘Tequila is linked to weight loss' - well hello, I’m sold! So, on a sunny Thursday evening I headed down to Tequila Mockingbird to see how many dress sizes I could go down in one night…*
You’ll find Tequila Mockingbird Clapham in the middle of all the bustle on Battersea Rise that leads from Northcote Road to Clapham Common. It’s open Monday – Saturday from 5pm leaving the staff Sunday for a much-needed recovery day. Tequila Mockingbird state their mission is to serve ‘great drinks, accompanied by cool tunes and a whole load of fun’ and we certainly were looking forward to that!
Popping ourselves in the bay window seat so that we could observe the goings on of Battersea Rise, our friendly waiter approached us with menus that neither my date nor I really needed as we’d been scouring the menu all day in anticipation. We opted for an Aperol Spritz and Tommy’s Margarita to start - with the addition of agave syrup for the Tommy’s to make it slightly sweeter than the classic margarita, so it's not going to knock my socks off on my first drink!
The bar is set over two levels – the ground floor bar has seating stretching along the bar if you want to be close and personal with your bartender and maybe grab a few of your own tips from the experts. However, if you’d prefer to tuck yourself away for a date night the bar stretches out to several high-seating areas. Heading down to the basement level, which is perfect for private parties, you’ll have your own bar to get your party started!
Time for our next cocktail. Happy hour is 5pm-9pm (every night!) so dangerously we have started doubling up our cocktails. Next on the list to sample is the Head Honcho Mojito and the Berrylicious from their own creations section on the menu. Each drink is expertly made and presented in an instagrammable fashion (we know what's important!). Even as the bar begins to fill up with groups of friends and dates flocking to make it for happy hour, the service remains quick and attentive and before we know it we are trying our next cocktails! A Pornstar Martini and a Mojito are next to try on the menu, they are presented to us along with what appeared to be a curtsy and a wink from the bar tender...or have I had too many cocktails now!?
In our prime people spotting position we have clocked a couple of friends so call them over to join us for our final drinks before heading home. We opt for two Espresso Martinis, an Old Fashioned and a Long Island Ice Tea - the perfect nightcap. It’s fair to say we have made a solid dent in the menu tonight and we’ll be back to work through the remainder imminently!
Don’t forget your Portico Places card next time you’re there and you’ll bypass the 5-9 happy hour rule and get 241 cocktails all night, every night Mon to Fri!
*For those hanging in to find out, the answer for me was none, unfortunately I did not wake up to find that my clothes no longer fit after knocking back to tequilas, however I’m not sure I can judge the theory on this occasion as Dominos is next door to Tequila Mockingbird and judging from the FOUR empty boxes on my floor, I opted for the family meal deal. I’ll be back very soon to give this theory another test!
