Keynote Speaker - James Murray, Deputy Mayor of London for Housing

We’re really pleased that the Deputy Mayor of London, James Murray, will be speaking. He will give us a unique insight into Sadiq Khan's plans for housing and we'll be able to quiz James on the role he sees London's 300,000 landlords playing in the future of our capital.

James Murray will also share his vision for how the Mayor of London’s programme will improve housing in London and affect private sector landlords.  Proposals could include London wide co-ordination of licensing, a scheme for naming and shaming criminal landlords, promoting accreditation and a new London wide lettings agency.  

Brexit, tax changes… what next?

All landlords need to reappraise their strategy in the light of Brexit and tax changes, and we'll be examining alternative options like mixed commercial and residential development, and the lending implications of new Bank of England regulation.

Mark Lawrinson, Regional Director of Portico, will also give a market update, focussing on the uncertainty surrounding house prices.

He will take us through the latest figures, including an extremely insightful borough by borough analysis of rental yield.

Airbnb

In 2008, Airbnb launched as an online service to let spare rooms or entire homes for short periods of time. Fast forward to 2016 and there are now 111,000 UK listings on the site, and London offers a huge 45% of those listings.

Interestingly, recent research by the Residential Landlords Association has also revealed that a third of listings are provided by owners with more than one home due to the profit margins, and 61% in London are being advertised for 90 days or more - making them long term lettings, and subsequently putting both landlords and tenants at risk.

We’ll ask the question of just how serious some landlords are about Airbnb, and look at the benefits compared to the potential risks.
