Drink Me Eat Me is a magical tea parlour, brimming with all things shiny, sparkly, colourful and kitsch. It’s a wonderful place for kids and adults alike, offering tea in gorgeous bone china teacups and a lip-smacking selection of cakes and treats worthy of the Mad Hatter himself. The eatery also offers kids’ activities and classes - from ballet to French - a private back area where parents can relax, and a spectacular space dressed in bunting which can be hired out for kids’ parties. I tumbled down the rabbit hole to go and meet new owner Francesca and find out about her plans for the place…
Tucked down lower end Kings Street, Drink Me Eat Me stands out in matt grey and baby pink, with a pretty striped canopy, doll’s house style bushes and pastel coloured outdoor seating. The space is split into two halves; the Drink Me side is the café and the Eat Me side is the beautiful party room, which can be hired out for parties. It also offers a number of fun kids’ activities, so little ones can learn or play while the parents relax in the café next door or in the private parent room out the back.
You step inside Drink Me Eat Me to a world of pure imagination. Art, gifts and sweet trinkets fill every available wall or surface and everything is pastel coloured. There’s plenty of space, with a seating area at the back and numerous tables dotted around the café.
Francesca - the new owner - looks perfectly at home standing behind the big counter, which is filled with gorgeous smelling pastries and sweet treats. She tells me she’s always wanted to own a tea shop, so when the space became available a couple of months ago she snapped it up. As we continue chatting I learn she has a lot of plans for the place, including a new and exciting breakfast and lunch menu which will feature all the classics as well as some more usual options. Afternoon tea is already very popular here.
The café already offers so much; there’s a wonderful selection of teas available and the Clipson & Sons coffee is rich and flavoursome. Food comes in the form of homemade, flaky sausage rolls and spinach and ricotta rolls, freshly made quiches and salads, plus a selection of deep-filled sarnies (you can even have them hot and grilled if you fancy).
Of course there’s naughty treats aplenty, from buttercream icing topped cupcakes to ooze in the middle brownies. The frozen yoghurt house that sits at the back of the café is the main attraction for me. Choose from a variety of tempting flavours then top with as many sweets as possible!
